2019 Penn State Chapter Symposium

As part of EnvironMentors’s model, each individual chapter holds its own symposium/showcase each academic year.  During the chapter symposium, student participants present their research projects to the faculty, students, family, friends, and members of the University, local, and state communities. Not only do the students present their research posters but they also compete against each other for the top three prizes. The top three winners at each chapter symposium get the chance to present their research at the annual EnvironMentors National Science fair and win various prizes.

Our Penn State EnvironMentors held its chapter symposium and fair on Saturday, April 27th, 2019 in Steidle building’ Atrium, located at the University Park campus. During the symposium, our student participants, divided into four research teams, presented their research posters to their families, friends, and members of Penn State’s communities. Our research teams are comprised of a faculty member, an undergraduate student, and a high school student. As stated in our model, the faculty member and undergraduate student act as mentors to our high school student participants.

The research posters presented that day addressed various environmental issues ranging from CO2 emissions, water resources, air quality, and many more. Our chapter’s top three teams and students are Natalia Carrasco and Ty Todd, Ireolubowa Mayegun, and Shawn Oputa. These students will go on to compete at the 2019 EnvironMentors National  Science fair, which will be held from June 1st to June 4th, 2019 in Washington D.C.
