Dr. Eugene’s EnvironMentors 2022-23 Research Project

Project Title: The Surface Energy Budget across Planet Earth

Project Description: Over the past two years, I have been collaborating with colleagues on understanding the role that atmospheric radiation plays in warming the Arctic surface. The datasets that we have used are the best weather-related ones in the world available for this purpose. In our analysis of these datasets, we have noticed many significant changes at the surface across Planet Earth. Our project would involve working with a team to quantify some of these surface changes across Planet Earth by

  • Learning about computers
  • Learning how to transfer information between computers in support of a research project
  • Learning a programming language so as to access large datasets and analyze their content
  • And drawing conclusions about important surface changes both globally and across the mid-Atlantic region where we live.

The programming tools learned are really valuable ones across the human enterprise in the first half of the 21st century. Scientists, energy traders, stock traders, economists, banks, airlines, health organizations, emergency managers, you name it, are all involved in analyses of large datasets.
